Scientists found the culprit of the melting of the “Doomsday Glacier” 02:29

An international team of climate scientists from the US, UK and other countries has identified the cause that started the melting of the giant Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica 80 years ago. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Thwaites Glacier is an ice sheet the size of the American state of Florida (192 thousand square kilometers). It is called the “Doomsday Glacier” because it contains enough water to raise the world’s sea level by 60 centimeters.

Thwaites Glacier has been melting rapidly since the 1980s, causing a 4% rise in sea level.

The retreat of the ice began in the 1940s due to an unusually strong El Niño, a global climate phenomenon that causes the Pacific Ocean to warm every few years, the researchers found. The heat wave lasted from 1939 to 1942 and also affected the Antarctic Pine Island Glacier, located north of Thwaites.

According to scientists, analysis of the nuclei showed that even a temporary thermal effect can trigger processes that will last for decades.

“When the system becomes unstable, the ice continues to retreat. The glacier is important not only because of its contribution to sea level rise, but also because it acts like a cork in a bottle, trapping a larger area of ice. If Thwaites becomes unstable, all the ice in West Antarctica would lose stability.” possibility,” said co-author Julia Wellner, a professor of geology at the University of Houston.

Previous scientists warnedAn iceberg will break off from Thwaites Glacier.
