Spanish scientists from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) tracked the longest journey of a wolf in Europe among the beast’s feces. The research was published in the official gazette Web site scientific institution.
Scat analysis showed that the male gray wolf, named GW1909m, traveled at least 1,240 kilometers from his birthplace near Nordhorn, Germany, to cross France and reach the Catalan Pyrenees in Spain, where he settled near a village. The predator was last seen in this area about a year ago.
According to scientists, GW1909m’s journey broke the record of its unnamed relative, which traveled 1,092 kilometers between Norway and Finland.
The researchers noted that such a long journey exemplifies the behavioral flexibility and physical abilities of wolves, emphasizing that the animal had to pass through landscapes with large cities.
Wolves’ long journeys help them find distantly related populations, preventing genetic isolation and inbreeding, experts say.
