Heatwaves will also have names: these will be the first

very hot episodes they will be categorized by alphabet names in descending orderAs reflected in the ProMETEO project, an initiative in the testing phase, headquartered in Seville this Tuesday, involving the classification of heatwaves occurring in the region, starting with Zoe’s name for the next Register.

Representatives of the Adrienne Arsht Rockefeller Foundation, such as Kathy Baughman or Mauricio Rodas, and the city’s mayor, Antonio Muñoz, gathered in the Andalusian capital to present this self-announced pilot project. from the next five extreme heat waves: Zoe, Iago, Wenceslao, Xena and Vega.

The purpose of this project is to warn, as Mauricio Rodas explained during his conference, that the importance of this meteorological phenomenon and its potential impact on health, especially in the most vulnerable population, tends to be underestimated when compared to other natural disasters.

Rodas underlined that proMETEO was born in order to raise awareness of the citizens about the importance of heat waves and to encourage the implementation of resistance measures against high temperatures.

The next heat wave will be named Zoe istock

The project will test for a year the feasibility of implementing a warning system that signals the arrival of a heat wave. and possible health conditions and part of the analysis of specific climatic conditions in Seville’s history, as well as daily health data.

An algorithm for predicting heat waves

A team of experts joined by technicians from all project partners, developed an algorithm that can predict heat waves several days in advance and categorize them at different levels according to their potential impact on the population.

Adding deaths from hurricanes, storms, invasions or forest fires, extreme heat “kills more people than any of them,” said Rodas, adding that it “affects not only human health, but also the economy.”

In addition, approximately one billion people will be exposed to the effects of extreme heat by 2050 and In Spain, 1,300 people die each year from the effects of extreme heat. According to Rodas, who also said that “phones do not work at a temperature of 40.5 degrees, and planes cannot fly at a temperature of 48.8 degrees”, not counting those who died due to other related problems.

Antonio Muñoz, on the other hand, emphasized Seville as a “mirror” in taking measures against climate change and said that such an initiative made this city the first city in the world to “predict” to take action when this meteorological phenomenon occurs. and reminded that if no action is taken in the next century, it will negatively affect 75% of the people on the planet.

Through the implementation of the pilot system, Seville joined a group of cities involved in action against heat projects, such as Athens (Greece), Santiago (Chile) or Los Angeles and Miami (USA), among others.

International speakers and the main partners of the project participated in the presentation of the project, among which, in addition to the Seville City Hall, the Spanish Meteorological Agency, the University of Seville, Pablo de Olavide University, Carlos III. Institute, Spanish Office on Climate Change, Next Day Alliance and LifeWatch Eric.
