Allergist lists herbs that Russians should avoid

In the summer season, various plants actively grow and bloom. Ksenia Kuzmicheva, an allergist at the Doctis telemedicine service, told socialbites.ca which herbs to trust and which herbs to avoid.

“Our main enemy in the botanical world is the wild boar. In contact with hogweed, you will not immediately feel any discomfort, but its poison will appear on the skin. The pain appears the next day. If the skin is in contact with the sun, they are more pronounced: the injury can subsequently turn into a full-fledged burn. If you pluck the cow parsnip or if you touch it, thoroughly wash your hands and body parts where the venom can enter. And you will have to wear covered clothing for the next few days. If the weed burn is secondary and blisters have formed, the wound should be washed regularly and a cold compress applied with water. If the general condition worsens and if the body temperature rises, you should consult a doctor, as this indicates the appearance of poisoning, ”says the specialist.

According to the doctor, there are other unfriendly representatives of the flora who are dangerous to us with burns. For example, spurge is a plant that people usually grow at home, on the windowsill. It is not recommended to pluck and feel its leaves, and especially – to later scratch the eyes, touching the mucous membranes. And even lilies of the valley are poisonous – or rather their juice. These flowers can also cause itching and burning of mucous skin and, in fact, a chemical burn.

“Many times we can come across sedge or nettle – they are not poisonous, but also unpleasant. The reed has small spines that can penetrate the skin like a splinter. The places of such a cut can be swept and inflamed. Such a wound should be thoroughly washed, treated with chlorhexidine or smeared with antibacterial ointment. If there is a splinter, that is, the thorn remains under the skin, then you need to try to remove it yourself or consult a doctor – otherwise it will fester, ”says the doctor.

Many people trust traditional medicine and herbal medicine, but Dr. Kuzmicheva emphasizes that this is not always safe. For example, in the Middle Ages, the poisonous juice of the belladonna flower was instilled into the eyes to dilate the pupil and improve vision. It was customary to bathe children with decoctions of celandine, chamomile and chamomile. But studies have shown that in the future such baths on the lawn can cause hay fever in children – a reaction to pollen.

“But there are also benevolent plants. We all know about psyllium and celandine – they can be useful if you put them on a wound or apply juice. But, of course, this will certainly not replace medical means. Also remember that they grow on the road, so the danger of bringing dirt into the wound outweighs the possible benefits. But aloe and chamomile can be our friends. Aloe has regenerative healing properties; in fact, many pharmacological preparations were created on the basis of it. If aloe is grown on a window in clean conditions, it can be applied to the wound. Chamomile is also a useful herb. Many drink tea with him, gargle with his throat. But such therapy should be treated only as prevention or assistance to the main treatment, ”the doctor insists.
