Scientists from Dongying General Hospital in China found that consuming niacin in foods reduces the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Research results published In the journal Scientific Reports.
7,055 people participated in the study, 243 of whom had COPD. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive, life-threatening lung disease characterized by inflammation of the airways and obstruction (swelling) of the bronchi.
Researchers recorded demographic information about the subjects’ gender, age, and body mass index (BMI). The researchers also collected information about the participants’ eating habits. It was obtained through two surveys administered three to ten days apart. Participants’ responses reflected calorie and alcohol intake, as well as niacin (nicotinic acid) intake.
The results showed that participants who reported higher dietary niacin intake had a significantly lower risk of developing COPD. Niacin, also known as vitamin B3 or niacin, is found in a variety of foods such as meat, fish and nuts. It plays a role in the regulation of metabolism, DNA repair and the functioning of the nervous system.
It was noted that the protective properties of niacin were observed in volunteers of different ages, races, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. This is most likely due to reduced oxidative stress (oxidation-related cell damage) and reduced inflammation in the airways in COPD.
