Scientists from the University of Eastern Finland found that people who walk to work have a reduced risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases. Research results published In European Journal of Public Health (EJPH).
Scientists collected information about the health and movement habits of more than six thousand volunteers. Blood samples were also taken to measure C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. This is the most informative indicator of tissue damage due to inflammation, necrosis and various injuries. In the blood of a healthy person, this protein is absent or detected in minimal amounts.
It turned out that people who walked for about 15 minutes a day had 7% lower CRP levels than those who drove to work or took public transportation. Those who walked 45 minutes a day (a little over 20 minutes to work and the same to home) had approximately 18% lower C-reactive protein concentrations.
Scientists noted that reducing this indicator is closely related to the health of the cardiovascular system – walking to work every day can reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, hypertension and other diseases.
