Meteorite hunters found fragments of asteroid 2024 BX1, which exploded in Earth’s atmosphere over Germany on January 21. In this respect reports Space.com portal.
The space object was detected by NASA observers approximately 90 minutes before it approached our planet. Calculations showed that 2024 BX1 is about one meter in diameter.
A group led by meteorite expert Peter Jenniskes of the SETI Research Institute for Extraterrestrial Intelligence set out to search for the debris. The expedition was successful; Within a few days, the team managed to find fragments weighing 5.3 grams and 3.1 grams.
Although meteorites have not yet been analyzed, experts believe the space rocks may be a rare type of object called aobrites.
“If parts of 2024 BX1 are confirmed to have been shaved off, they would represent only 1% of all known meteors, making them very rare indeed,” said Denis Vida, a meteor physics researcher at Western University in Canada.
Scientists still don’t know exactly where shaved hair comes from in the solar system. Analysis of the found fragments will help to learn more about the location of their possible origin.
Previously NASA experts managed Open a container containing dust samples from the asteroid Bennu.
