The U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee has drafted amendments to the military law that would require American women to enroll in the Selective Service System. This is stated in the article published on Thursday. US National Defense Act for Fiscal Year 2023.
Military registration is mandatory for all American men between the ages of 18 and 25. If there is a change in the information such as name and place of residence entered in their military registration cards, they must notify the Selective Service System within 10 days.
The penalty for evading military enlistment is $250,000, and it also provides for the cancellation of certain benefits and the impossibility of entering public service.
Since 2020, Congress has been trying to change the wording in the law that states the mandatory registration of men, since its adoption, women also began to serve in the military without restrictions. Amendments to the law in September 2021 replaced the phrase “all men” with the phrase “all Americans”, but was not included in the final text of the law.
