Oncologist explained the main reasons for the development of stomach cancer 06:00

Stomach cancer is a dangerous cancer disease that ranks sixth among all types of cancer in Russia. According to statistics, this disease is more common in men (around 58%) than in women (42%). It is dangerous because it can hide without any symptoms in the early stages. Oncologist of the highest category Beslan Balkarov, surgeon at SM-Clinic, told socialbites.ca what are the triggers that contribute to the development of stomach cancer.

Especially according to him, this is a genetic predisposition. So, we are talking about the presence of stomach cancer in close relatives (grandmother, grandfather, parent) and the transmission of the disease through genes.

“There are several hereditary pathologies that are directly or indirectly associated with this disease: diffuse stomach cancer develops due to a mutation in the CDH1 gene, which increases the risk of developing the disease throughout life by up to 80%; non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) develops due to mutation of the MLH1 or MSH2 genes and is one of the main factors in the development of gastric cancer; Balkarov said that due to mutations in the APC gene, proximal gastric polyposis (more than one polyp in the stomach) occurs and the risk of stomach cancer increases.

Another risk factor noted by the doctor is colonization of the stomach with Helicobacter pylori bacteria.

“Helicobacter pylori bacteria is one of the most dangerous gram-negative bacteria living in the pylorus of the stomach. It is dangerous because it exhibits a high survival rate in the aggressive acidic environment of the stomach and constantly damages the mucous membrane. The expert noted that as a result of the vital activity of bacteria in the stomach, inflammatory processes develop, which first cause “ordinary” gastrointestinal diseases, and then stomach cancer.

The oncologist also associates the high risk of developing stomach cancer with excessive consumption of smoked, fried, salted, spicy and canned foods. As evidence, he cited the example of the inhabitants of Japan, who eat mostly spicy and carbohydrate foods (noodles, rice, seasoned with spicy sauces, pickled vegetables). Stomach cancer is the leading cancer disease in this country. Also, non-compliance with the diet – overeating or quick snacks instead of a full meal – leads to disruption of the proper functioning of the stomach and, as a result, the development of oncology.

Another risk factor noted by Balkarov is carcinogenic substances in foods.

According to him, nitric and nitrous acids, as well as various nitrites and nitrates found in vegetables, fruits, smoked and dried foods, beer and cheese, pose a great threat to health. Since they have special chemical activity, they can disrupt the integrity of the cells in the gastric mucosa, causing healthy cells to turn into tumor cells.

“Alcoholic beverages and tobacco are strong provocateurs of gastrointestinal cancer. The ethyl alcohol and toxic carcinogens contained in cigarettes cause acute erosive processes in the stomach, which can turn into stomach cancer over time,” he said.

At the same time, the oncologist emphasized that modern medicine has great diagnostic capabilities, thanks to which it is possible to detect this serious disease in the early stages and start treatment in a timely manner.

“The most successful treatment in the early stages of cancer is surgical removal of the affected organ where the regional lymph nodes are located. In some cases, surgery may be supplemented with radiation and chemotherapy. The effectiveness of treatment depends on how quickly the disease is detected. Of course, the prognosis is much more positive in early types of cancer; In this case, the patient’s survival rate is more than 80%,” concluded the specialist.
