M1A1 Abrams tanks transferred by the USA to the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) received M-19 Abrams Reactive Armor Tiles (ARAT) dynamic protection units. The publication writes about this Drive.
According to journalists, a video showing the updated car began to be distributed on social networks on January 14. Here you can see how the tank moves through a forest area, while the hull and dynamic protection units receive appropriate camouflage.
The ARAT unit was developed by Ensign-Bickford Aerospace and Defense (EBAD). It consists of a layer of explosive sandwiched between two metal plates. M-19 modules have been in service with the US Army since 2006.
Experts explained that dynamic protection elements explode upon contact with an attacking projectile, thus minimizing its impact on armor. Like other reactive defenses, the M-19 ARAT fires once and then the armor must be replaced.
