American dermatologist Debra Jaliman said Live Science says the age at which wrinkles appear can vary depending on a variety of factors. The process by which the appearance of the skin changes is caused by the destruction of the structural components of the dermis.
As the structural components of the dermis begin to deteriorate, wrinkles begin to appear. The dermatologist explained that this process is commonly known as skin aging. With age, the number of fibroblasts, which are cells that produce collagen and elastin proteins, begins to decrease. Additionally, existing structural proteins begin to break down faster. Aging also causes the upper layer of the skin’s epidermis, called the stratum corneum, to thin. This structural change makes it difficult for the skin to retain moisture and makes wrinkles more visible.
The rate at which wrinkles form in aging depends on many factors, including ethnicity. People with darker skin tones experience age-related facial changes later than people with lighter skin tones. This is partly due to genes involved in the synthesis of melanin pigment.
There are other risk factors for wrinkles that can be partially eliminated. These include bad habits, excessive use of tanning and living in an area with poor ecology. It is stated that exposure to air pollution and smoking can cause oxidative stress (an imbalance between the production and destruction of harmful molecules called free radicals) in the body.
Free radicals are byproducts of the breakdown of oxygen in the body. These highly active particles can damage the structural components of the skin. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can prevent this process.
