Researchers from Nanjing Medical University, China, found that getting extra sleep on the weekend after the work week may reduce the likelihood of heart attack and other cardiovascular disease. The results of the research were presented on the news portal daily mail.
The authors studied 3,400 people to see how sleep cycles affect health. The researchers collected data on the participants’ sleep habits as well as their health conditions. After analyzing the collected data, they found that those who did not get enough sleep during the week but were able to get an extra two hours of rest on Saturday or Sunday were 63% less likely to have a heart attack or stroke.
In contrast, workers who were unable to catch up on lost sleep hours on weekends had a much higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
Previous studies have also shown that an extra hour or two of sleep on weekends can prevent obesity and depression.
