A team of clinical psychologists from Sabanci University in Turkey found that saying good morning to neighbors and being kind to strangers makes people happier. The results of the scientists’ research have been published magazine Social Psychology and Personality Science (SPPS).
60 thousand people participated in the research, 40 thousand of whom were British. Participants filled out various surveys about their happiness levels and daily habits regarding interacting with people. The results of the responses showed that those who interacted with strangers more often were more satisfied with their lives.
According to the study’s authors, brief interactions, greetings and gratitude can boost well-being. Scientists suggest that this works by strengthening the sense of belonging to society. It gives people a sense of worth and importance, two emotions that are considered a basic human need and play a role in how happy a person is.
