Scientists from University College London have discovered that an 18-month meditation training program can improve the well-being of older people. The research was published in the journal PLOS ONE.
More than 130 healthy people aged 65 to 84 participated in the experiment. Half of the patients lived as usual, and the rest took a course to master meditation. It consisted of nine months of mindfulness training and nine months of kindness and compassion training. Two-hour group sessions were held weekly. Patients also practiced at home and attended a one-day retreat.
Meditation training significantly improved overall well-being. Participants became more aware of their thoughts, feelings, and surroundings and were more likely to experience a sense of respect, gratitude, and connectedness; all of which can contribute to stronger relationships with other people. The program was most beneficial for participants with lower psychological well-being at baseline.
