Oleg Smolin, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Science and Higher Education, told socialbites.ca that a girl with higher education can become a more qualified mother. This is how the senator of the Chelyabinsk region interpreted the words of Margarita Pavlova that girls should stop pursuing higher education due to the loss of reproductive function. Smolin believes that Russian women should have the opportunity to choose where they can develop themselves further: at work or in the family.
“I think the next statement may be an offer to extradite Domostroy. Of course, a girl should have the right to choose: to realize herself more at work or more in the family, and best of all, in both functions. However, we know that more than half of the students in our country since the Soviet period have been girls. I’m afraid they won’t agree with the honorable senator. Let’s not forget to say that higher education does not only mean finding a job, but also a more qualified mother. Unfortunately, mothers who do not have a serious education think that children should grow up like grass on the roadside – as they grow, they will grow. And a modern, real mother must think about how to raise a child, including how to raise him. There is an old Odessa joke: “Doctor, our Monya is probably sick, she is three years old, she does not play the violin yet.” “If all our mothers shared this position to a reasonable extent, I think we would have become the first country in the world in education, technology and other parameters long ago,” she said.
The MP described the idea of artificially limiting higher education as an attempt to “reverse progress”.
“The truth is that progress cannot be stopped. It is necessary to solve the problems of education with the help of education. Education is not just about learning, it is also about educating. “The idea that investing in yourself and your children can be as important, valuable and happy an investment as investing in professional success is an important idea,” he explained.
Smolin added that Russia has a difficult demographic situation. According to him, the problem of low birth rate can be solved by gradually canceling mortgage loans when children are born.
“We have seen the Rosstat forecast, according to which even in 2044 our numbers will be much less than now. There are long-term predictions that if the situation does not change, we may number less than 100 million by the end of the century. Do not think that the contradictions of progress can be solved by stopping it. The contradictions of progress are resolved in a different way by its more correct use. VEB recently expressed its proposals on a proportional, gradual increase in maternity capital and suggested giving a car to the fourth child. In general, I recommend a completely different version. During the socialist period, the Czech Republic, after a demographic decline, showed demographic growth with the introduction of the following system: a family is created and a loan is taken for housing, the first child is born, 25% of the loan is written off, the second child – 50%, the third child – the entire loan is written off . “It seems to me that this is a much stronger incentive than giving away a car,” he said.
Member of the Federation Council Margarita Pavlova said in an interview with Tsargrad that girls should be diverted from higher education to childbirth. According to her, young Russian women are now focused on getting a quality education and building a good career. As a result, a woman who has not given birth to a child until the age of 40 loses her understanding of “what home is.” Pavlova added that raising demographic indicators in the country with economic measures, providing aid, social assistance and apartments to young families is the wrong way.
Previously, the Ministry of Health had described the idea of having children after a career as “sterile”.
