Defrosting food on the kitchen counter, buying ready-made salads and using the same knife to cut all types of food are dangerous habits associated with an increased risk of contracting parasites and viruses, a food safety expert has said. In this respect reports Daily mail.
Food safety expert Dr. from Northeastern University in Boston. Darin Detwiler explained that thawing food outside of the refrigerator can pose a health hazard. Leaving food (especially meat) on the kitchen counter for long periods of time increases the risk of contamination by bacteria such as salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus. Eating such foods can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration.
The doctor also does not recommend the continued use of food delivery services. When preparing a meal yourself, a person knows exactly what products the dish consists of. It is almost impossible to monitor the quality of ingredients in ready meals. For the same reason, Detwiler recommends avoiding purchasing packaged salads. Preparation of such salads in factories where large numbers of personnel work creates the possibility of food contamination. Additionally, the moist environment of plastic packaging encourages the proliferation of pathogenic organisms.
Many people use the same knife to cut different types of food. The expert explained that it was wrong to do this. For example, chopping vegetables with the same knife used to cut chicken can spread bacteria such as salmonella, which is often found in animal products.
Detwiler also recommends limiting pets’ access to the kitchen. If a person plays with their pet while preparing food and does not wash their hands, the food may be contaminated with pathogens carried by cats and dogs.
Another common mistake is to rinse the meat under running tap water. This not only helps clean the product, but also increases the risk of pathogenic microorganisms from the meat surface being transferred to the sink and countertops along with splashes of water.
