Archaeologists find skull of a Copper Age woman who survived two trepanations 12:28

The skull of a woman with traces of surgery from the Copper Age was found in Spain. Judging by his healing bone tissue, he successfully survived two trepanations. The study was published on: International Journal of Palaeopathology.

The skull of a woman aged between 35 and 45 was found in southeastern Spain. Two holes measuring 53 x 31 millimeters and 31 x 12 millimeters were found on it. Scientists believe they were left behind due to trephination, a surgical procedure in which holes are drilled or scraped into the skull to expose the dura mater. The absence of cracks spreading from the damage and the clear edges indicate that these did not occur as a result of injury.

The holes were probably made using a stone tool. The woman was also restrained or given psychoactive substances that would previously dull her pain or cause her to lose consciousness. Researchers don’t know why the woman underwent this complex procedure. Judging by the healing skull tissue, he survived both surgeries, which were performed at different times. She lived for about two months after the second one.
