British scientists from Queen Mary University of London have discovered that the common cold can cause long-term complications similar to the effects of post-coronavirus syndrome, also known as “long Covid-19”. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Lancet e-Clinical Medicine.
Experts examined data from more than 10.1 thousand patients and concluded that people who recovered from acute respiratory viral infections experienced symptoms such as cough, abdominal pain and diarrhea four weeks after the initial infection. However, the study participants tested negative for Covid-19.
The results showed that colds, flu, and other acute respiratory infections unrelated to coronavirus can cause long-term health consequences. But scientists do not yet have evidence that long-term symptoms of ARVI have the same severity and duration as “long COVID.”
“These persistent infections are very difficult to diagnose and treat due to the lack of diagnostic tests and the multitude of possible symptoms. “More than 200 cases have been investigated over the long duration of the coronavirus pandemic alone,” said Julia Vivaldi, lead author of the study.
Scientists emphasized that it is necessary to continue to study the long-term effects of Covid-19 and other respiratory infections to determine the most appropriate form of treatment and rehabilitation for patients.
