American-Russian physicist Alexei Ekimov admitted that he was surprised by the news that he was awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of quantum dots, and at first he perceived it as a joke. The investigator explained this issue to Voice of America (known as a foreign agent media outlet in the Russian Federation) over the phone.
According to Ekimov, he was woken up by a phone call at five in the morning. However, after turning on the broadcast of the ceremony, he realized that it was not playing.
Alexey Ekimov noted that when he conducted experiments in Leningrad in 1981, he did not evaluate his discovery in terms of practical application and could not imagine what it would lead to in the future.
“Only Chairman Mao looked this far ahead,” the scientist said, quoting a Soviet proverb.
Alexey Ekimov noted that his work is based on the fundamental physical laws described in the five-volume book “Theoretical Physics”, written by Landau and Lifshitz 10 years before his discovery.
After Ekimov’s scientific article became famous abroad, scientists from other countries also participated in the research. Today, quantum dots are used in many industries, including modern computer and television displays.
