Harvard Medical School Associate Professor of Medicine Dr. Steven Juraszek explained that the dizziness and blurred vision that people may experience when they suddenly stand up from a lying position are caused by the rapid drop in blood pressure. If this condition persists for a long time, it may be a sign of a malfunction in the thyroid gland, heart or low blood sugar. In this respect reports Live Science.
A short-term loss of balance, dizziness and a feeling of darkness in the eyes is called postural or orthostatic hypotension. It occurs due to rapid changes in body position. When a person stands up quickly, approximately 300-800 cubic centimeters of blood from the upper body rushes to the legs, causing a temporary drop in blood pressure. This is normal for the human body if it lasts no more than three minutes.
There is a chronic form of orthostatic hypotension in which people become confused and unable to stand for longer periods of time after changing positions. This condition is dangerous because it can indicate the presence of thyroid diseases, heart arrhythmia and low blood sugar levels.
The scientist also noted that attacks of orthostatic hypotension may occur more often in older people due to a decrease in the heart’s ability to regulate its rhythm.
Previously recognizedBlood pressure in young people increases the risk of early heart attack.
