According to the WMO, the average global temperature reached 16.38°C last month, 0.5°C above the previous all-time record set in September 2020. The new maximum is approximately 1.75°C above the pre-industrial period of 1850-1900.
“Since June, the world has been experiencing unprecedented heat on land and at sea. Temperature anomalies are huge; It’s much bigger than anything we’ve seen in the past. Winter sea ice extent in Antarctica was the lowest recorded for this time of year.
It is particularly concerning that El Niño warming is still developing, so we can expect these record temperatures to continue for several more months. This will have cascading effects on our environment and society,” said WMO Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas.
WMO added that the average sea surface temperature outside polar waters reached 20.92 °C last September, which was the highest recorded for September and the second highest for any month after August 2023.
