Parks Canada external relations manager Natalie Fay said the agency received a report of the bear attack from a GPS device on Friday evening. The device showed the coordinates of the emergency area in the Red Deer River valley.
A rescue team was immediately dispatched to the scene, but weather conditions hindered the team’s speed.
“The rescue team arrived at the scene at 1 a.m. and found two bodies,” Fay said.
Experts also noticed an aggressive grizzly bear in the same place.
“To ensure safety, Parks Canada staff destroyed the animal on site,” the Canadian Press reported.
