Psychologists have found a powerful way to combat stress at work 13:41

Canadian scientists from Simon Fraser University investigated ways to reduce stress and anxiety among employees in the workplace. They found that mindfulness practice worked well for this task. To work published In the scientific journal Personality and Individual Differences (PID).

According to experts, 83 percent of employees in the United States alone experience work-related stress. This leads to a wide range of problems, from absenteeism and frequent layoffs to accidents. Work stress causes productivity to decrease and insurance costs to increase.

Mindfulness helps to cope with nervous tension arising from work tasks – a state in which a person focuses on current tasks and is not distracted by thoughts about past or future events. Mindfulness also helps you avoid becoming overwhelmed by your experiences and reacting emotionally to them.

Researchers conducted two studies examining the effects of mindfulness practice on perceived stress in the workplace. The results showed that focusing on the present helped employees perceive their job responsibilities as less threatening and difficult. More positive evaluations of the tasks at hand resulted in employees experiencing less anxiety and made them more relaxed.

Psychologists have noted that managers can help their subordinates by framing work tasks in a more positive light, emphasizing positive work outcomes, and creating a culture in which mistakes are viewed as opportunities to learn and grow.
