Climate change can interrupt people’s sleep. Article about it published In One World.
“In this study, we provide the first planetary evidence that above-average temperatures disrupt human sleep,” says Kelton Minor of the University of Copenhagen. “We show that this is primarily due to late sleeping and early waking in hot weather.”
To find this out, the scientists used anonymous global data collected from sleep tracking bracelets. In total, 7 million sleep records were processed for 47,000 adults in 68 countries on all continents.
The researchers concluded that on very hot nights, when the temperature stays above 30 degrees, sleep decreases by an average of 14 minutes. The chances of getting less than seven hours of sleep also increase with temperature. It is stated that the effect of temperature is more significant in underdeveloped countries, probably due to the lack of air conditioning.
Rising global temperatures by 2099 could lead to a 50-58 hour annual reduction in human sleep time, researchers say.
