The non-replacement endoprosthesis of the hip joint was developed by specialists from the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU). This was reported to socialbites.ca by the Ministry of Education and Science.
With age, the hip joint wears out and may require partial replacement with an endoprosthesis. Endoprostheses are mostly made of metals, the difference in stiffness with bone causing the prosthesis to loosen and need replacement after 5-10 years.
“Today, domestic endoprostheses of the hip joints are direct competitors of foreign analogues. Foreign prostheses are made of metal alloys, on which inflammatory reactions of periarticular tissues often occur, on the microdust that arises as a result of mechanical friction of prosthetic parts during movement. The use of carbon-carbon composite prostheses eliminates repeated extraction and replacement,” said Yegor Razumovsky, design engineer at the Ural Composite Materials Research Institute, a student at the Department of Design and Production of Automatic Machines at PNRPU.
The prosthesis consists of two parts – a sphere and a leg. The first is made of a fibrous unidirectional composite material with carbon fibers and a phenol-formaldehyde matrix. The latter is made of titanium, mounted on the cylindrical-conical surface of the foot by tight fit. Calculation of the stress-strain state of the prosthesis stem was performed using a computer model.
Russian development has properties similar to bone, which excludes resorption of bone tissue and relaxation of the femur. After 7-10 years, the material of the prosthesis is partially replaced by bone tissue, and the released carbon participates in the body’s metabolism.
Production of a new endoprosthesis is scheduled for 2025 in the city of Nytva.
