Companies struggle to work remotely: 40% of employees do not receive compensation for expenses

A significant number of Spanish companies find it difficult to scratch their pockets to cover the expenses of their employees when they work remotely. Although the law obliges companies to provide a financial or compensatory bonus to their employees, 42.5% According to the latest report released this Tuesday by Consultant and ETT Adecco, 10 percent of regular remote workers say they have not received any payment from their company.

The new teleworking law, which has been in force since 2021, clearly states that teleworking will in no case entail any additional costs for workers. 30% or more So your day is from home, two or more days a week, in a five-day workweek.

Most of the collective agreements that have been renewed since the regulation came into force already contain some type of provision that provides for the issue of teleworking costs. Without going any further, last week employers and the CCOO signed the new office and dispatch list in Catalonia. 1.5 euros per remote working day.

Other industries have created the business obligation to provide their employees with minimal equipment such as computers, screens, ergonomic chairs or cell phones, among others, and some deals have a mix of both.

The obligation to pay for the costs of teleworking, among other things, has slowed down the implementation of agreements regulating this method in companies. It has also contributed, among other factors, to the decline in the number of employees who regularly work from home over the past year.

According to data collected by Adecco through 3,992 interviews, three out of four workers The interviewees confirmed that their company is no longer providing them with remote working opportunities, with the remainder of the quarter doing so. If we compare these data with those of the INE, currently 85% of companies do not work from home any day, compared to 71.5% registered during quarantine.

And going back to the Adecco survey, when companies that can work remotely are asked what they hold against this model, most don’t know what to answer. 13.5% say this “The team’s performance is not satisfactory”, 11.5% advocate “higher costs” and 5.7% state that there are “too many challenges in terms of occupational risk prevention”. The rate of those who say that they are against remote working but do not discuss the reason is 69.2%.

Weak candidates… but they will keep recruiting

Emotions do not always match the real progress of the economy, and a company’s perception of its immediate environment is not always reflected in the entire productive fabric. Evidence of this was the statements made by various economic forums last summer when they made a practical forecast. technical recession returned from vacation and eventually the economy continued to grow.

And despite the fact that Spain is now one of the EU countries where the IMF is predicting higher GDP growth this year, the Spanish business community is openly proclaiming itself. pessimistic It’s about the future of the economy, according to the latest data compiled by Adecco. 60% of companies, work this year will be worse than 2022. 32.45% think it will be similar to what they experienced last year. And only 6.62% believe that things will get better in the coming months.

What conflicts with the hiring expectations that companies set later. So in general they think companies will hire less, but they don’t. 51% of those surveyed by Adecco say they will keep their template as it is now, 31.8% are considering hiring in 2023 (2.2% more than in 2022), and 17.2% are considering layoffs, layoffs or pay cuts.
