Baikal omul individuals increased in size. About informs TASS, with reference to Vladimir Peterfeld, head of the Baikal branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography.
Baikal omul is an endemic species of Lake Baikal that lives only in it. This fish has commercial value, but in 2017 commercial production of Baikal omul was banned due to declining numbers. Amateur fishing was also banned, an exception was made only for the indigenous peoples of the North and winter fishing.
“In recent years we have recorded the highest pelagic omul growth rate in history. That is, such a large omul never came to spawn. This is most evident in the pelagic group. For example, if in 1985 there were three omules of 300-350 grams in a kilogram, now these are almost 600-800 grams of producers,” he said.
Scientists have no explanation for the observed increase in individuals’ weight. On May 23, a six-day expedition will begin, where, among other things, they plan to study the size of the Baikal omul. Experts from VNIRO and the Limnological Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences will participate in it.
