Antibiotics are often mixed with food because they are used in livestock. Medicines are used not only to treat and prevent infectious diseases, but also to stimulate animals to grow faster. However, along with manure, residual amounts of antibiotics can enter the soil and crops, including wheat, maize, and other grains that people actively eat. Also, some of the antibiotics from the waste end up in the water and can be transferred to aquatic life such as fish. Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, a candidate of medical sciences, a neurologist at the Gemotest Laboratory, told socialbites.ca.
“Therefore, trace amounts of antibiotics can be found in all products, but they are most commonly found in meat and milk. On farms, animals receive antibiotics in their feed, so their meat almost always contains antibacterial agents. They can also be found in milk, eggs, and fish. Only trace amounts of antibiotics are usually detected in greens, vegetables and fruits. “But if a farmer waters his beds with an antibacterial solution against pests, the content of such substances may be even greater than that of meat,” he said.
According to him, a person who consumes products containing antibiotics daily, even in small doses, may face many health problems.
“Products containing antibiotics increase the risk of developing allergies, dysbacteriosis, bronchial asthma, obesity and many other ailments. But the most dire consequence is the formation and strengthening of bacterial resistance to antimicrobial drugs. The fact is that they successfully learn to defend themselves against antibiotics. And the more drugs are used to fight microorganisms, the faster they become resistant to drugs. Treatment of pneumonia, tuberculosis, gonorrhea, salmonellosis and other infections becomes more difficult every year due to antibiotic resistance. And not in animals, but in humans, ”Ekaterina Demyanovskaya warned.
Despite the danger, he noted that in Russia the content of antibiotics in products is regulated by law, so the risk of eating something prohibitively dangerous for health is minimal.
“Rospotrebnadzor and Roskachestvo, manufacturers control the content of certain antibiotics in finished products. Thus, the content of the four most commonly used antibiotics in milk is normalized. Theoretically, if the manufacturer uses other drugs, investigators may not notice them. However, these are exceptional cases. At the same time, most manufacturers in our country are still conscientious and do not use antibiotics at all. The candidate of science products are marked with a special sign – a white sheet on a green background and the word “organic,” ”explained the candidate of science.
