Doctors from the University of Washington have calculated that the number of people worldwide living with diabetes will double over the next three decades, reaching a total of 1.3 billion by 2050. The results of the scientists’ research were presented as follows: magazine Lancet.
The study’s authors analyzed and summarized all available epidemiological data on the prevalence of diabetes in the world. In total, the researchers examined more than 27,000 sources from which data was collected from 1990 to 2021.
“Using a modeling tool that takes into account socio-demographic factors and obesity, we estimated the prevalence of diabetes by 2050. Our team estimates that within 30 years each country is expected to experience an increase in the number of cases. Current trends include countries in the regions expected to be most affected by diabetes, including North Africa and the Middle East and Pacific island countries, where current trends could lead to 1 in 5 people developing diabetes by 2050.”
Researchers noted that the prediction may not be true if government officials take measures to prevent the disease.
