Seismologists from the University of California have discovered that the onset of an earthquake can be predicted using GPS stations. The results of the work of scientists have been published. magazine Science.
In this paper, the authors analyzed GPS data on the displacement of monitoring stations before 90 major earthquakes. Often during a seismic event, the lithospheric plates move, so scientists analyze data on the movement of the stations. Apparently, about two hours before the first shock, the stations begin to move noticeably along the fault line.
Researchers continue to study the obtained data and will try to develop methods to fix the preliminary stage of the sliding of the earth’s crust. The authors suggest that the development of a network of seismic stations connected to GPS will make it possible to quickly predict the onset and severity of future earthquakes. According to the researchers, two hours will be enough to start the evacuation of the population of the seismically active zone.
