WHO has recorded 429 cases of childhood hepatitis, mostly in Europe.

The number of cases of acute childhood hepatitis of unknown origin is already 42981 more than a week ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported today, six patients died and 26 of them needed a transplant.

Most of the cases occurred in Europe and they are registered for now. 22 countrieshowever, only 12 (including the UK, Spain, USA and Israel) had more than five cases detected in the region.

WHO says three out of four affected children less than five yearsand required intensive care in 15% of patients.

The cases are suspected to be related adenoviruseshowever, this pathogen has so far not been generally associated with cases of acute hepatitis.
