They plan to create a center for crop breeding and seed production in the Belgorod region, reports regional government press office.
As reported, the main task of the center will be to supply seeds of domestic production to the region and all of Russia. Thus, in the first stage, local agricultural producers plan to reduce their dependence on the supply of imported varieties and hybrids and abandon them altogether in the future.
V. Ya. The infrastructure of the Belgorod Agricultural University named after Gorin will be the basis for the development of such a center. The structure will also include the region’s seed growing businesses and Belgorod FARC RAS. And the regional Ministry of Agriculture will oversee the work of experts.
“I certainly will not miss the opportunity to establish a center for selection and seed production at the federal level in our region. “We need to draw up a clear project with a roadmap and a risk map for receiving federal funding,” said Vyacheslav Gladkov, Governor of the Belgorod Region.
He also noted that the region has all the necessary infrastructure and favorable conditions for creating a center: a favorable climate, a large number of agricultural enterprises, highly qualified specialists, rich scientific potential.
