Amaia Salamanca: “I wouldn’t reject a project just because my body was seen”

Two women carrying their weight ‘Welcome to Eden’new Spanish Netflix series: Amaia Salamanca and Amaia Aberasturi. One manages the eco-sustainable community on the paradise island where the plot takes place, while the other is one of the young women who has just arrived and will eventually become his enemy.

Amaia Salamanca is the island’s guru, Astrid.

Amaia Salamanca: Astrid is the founder of this community with Erik. She wants young people to come and teach them that there is a possibility to build a better world, to live a more environmentally friendly life, but in reality she knows very well who each of them is, what their shortcomings are, and the problems. She has them in their house and so she knows how to manipulate them and take them to her lands.

He is a born manipulator. Can you also say that the show has a bad side?

Amaia Salamanca: I don’t think anyone would say how bad I am, so I defend Astrid to the death because she truly believes in her project. And if you need to get someone ahead for it to keep growing, then you will get it.

Thus, Astrid confirms Machiavelli’s theory: the end justifies the means.

Amaia Salamanca: Yes, I wouldn’t have had a hand as strong as Astrid to do certain things and so I believe the end doesn’t justify the means. I’m more trying to channel things. From all that’s going on right now, we come from a war in Ukraine and I think there are ways to solve problems without going short.

Zoa, the character of Amaia Aberasturi, is a girl who had to grow up before her family life. And on the cell phone, “Are you happy?” when he received a mysterious message asking that he never thought about it and embarked on this adventure.

Amaia Aberasturi: She had to live in a very unstructured family. She’s lucky to have a sister, so she doesn’t feel lonely. Zoa, who does not have a strong mother and father figure, plays this role with her older sister, but my character is also young and wants to live. When this message arrives, she decides to take some time for herself, have fun, and goes for it.

One of the themes emerging in ‘Welcome to Paradise’ is the impact of social networks on young people. Do you think networks are a good way to get us to reflect on everything we show about our lives?

Amaia Aberasturi: I don’t think it is an educational series in this respect, but of course there will be people who will evaluate it. I believe that social networks should be respected. There are many good things, but also some not so good.

Amaia Salamanca: There may be criticisms because the children who enter the island are very active on social networks and then they come there and even cell phones are not allowed. Therefore, it is okay for young people to think about what to do if social networks are suddenly taken away from them. I think it is useful to do this reflection.

Amaia Salamanca, you realized that it was difficult for you to see yourself on the screen at first. Have you already overcome this?

Amaia Salamanca: No, it is still difficult for me and now it will be very difficult for me to change. But you must know how to see yourself, because in this way we learn a little about ourselves. Since this drama brought us all together, it was like a pitcher of cold water, I always went to a corner and watched it alone. And it was beautiful. Of course, I pretended to be small every time I went out.

Amaia Aberasturi: Initial imaging is complex. It’s also remarkable that we didn’t see much of a combo, so everything was new, there were a lot of stimuli, and that didn’t happen in all the projects I did. I judge myself a lot in general, but I see what I’m doing four or five times if necessary, until I have a more objective perspective and an idea of what I think is constructive about what I’m doing. It’s important because seeing me is learning.

Amaia Aberasturi, you have some sensual scenes. How do you deal with them?

Amaia Aberasturi: Pretty bad, I don’t like them at all, for me they are the worst. I’ll have to get used to it eventually. But that’s our business and there are times when it touches you. I need to learn to relax a little more, but I don’t know if I can.

Amaia Salamanca: We now have the intimacy coordinator figure that makes life much easier for all of us. I haven’t had a lot of sex scenes this season but I think the whole cast feels more comfortable in the end because they know they’re going to be as organized as possible.

Amaia Salamanca, have you ever turned down a project because of such scenes?

No, I’ve never come to reject a project just for that reason. But someone just came to tell me that there are too many erotica. And the first thing I want to do is read the scripts and maybe get together with the directors, the producers and see how it will be handled, I would say yes if it makes sense. I wouldn’t say no because my body would be seen. If it fits the plot and makes sense, I would.
