Zakharova called Latvia’s desire to ban Russian ships’ access to ports “absurd”
The official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, appreciated Latvia’s desire to ban Russian ships from entering its ports. Such a decision, she says, is simply absurd, reports the Lenta.ru correspondent.
According to Zakharova, the authors of such an initiative probably decided to “strike” international transport and logistics chains. According to her, a possible ban will benefit neither the Baltic countries nor Europe as a whole.
“In the event that Latvia and Lithuania make another anti-Russian decision, our cargo flows will be diverted if necessary. Russian ports in the Baltic and Black Sea basins will continue to operate and develop rapidly, but the economic interests of European countries will inevitably suffer,” she stressed.
It was announced earlier that the government of Latvia wants to make a decision to deny Russian ships access to the ports of the republic. According to the country’s transport minister, Talis Linkayts, his department called on port authorities to refuse entry to ships flying the Russian flag, but they did not listen to the authorities’ position.
