This is how Oviedo’s “Tinder scammer” acts: he deceives his victims, hides their money, and disappears.

You meet a man on the street. He has a good demeanor, polite and a little flattering: “What beautiful eyes!” you think. Link and access notes to a dinner ending with an offer to repeat the experience. It’s the beginning of a relationship filled with expensive travel, fine dining, and confessions with an unflattering promise: “I’ll give you the money back“. Thus, the way it works. Oviedo version of the popular “Tinder scam”already a man cheated on several women in the cityby taking at least three zeros from them and pulling off the bandage of illusionism with which he tricked his victims: “There’s no way to find him, I searched for him, sent messages, emails…”, assures one. Complainants who agreed to meet with La Nueva España, a newspaper belonging to the same group called Prensa Ibérica, on condition that their name be published.

The scammer introduced himself to his victims under the following name: “Jim”, 52 years old, is an Angolan national.. “I don’t believe anything he tells me anymore. I think he’s telling you the truth and the lies to make a believable mix,” says the victim, who accompanied him to meet the family core who allegedly came to Santander. First dates were impressive always invited to good restaurants where she appears regularly with her elegant appearance – “always greeted the managers as if he knew them, entered the venues with confidence” – luxury hotels and many connections; but no friends and excessive drinking: “He gets along very well in the night world.”

With trust came intimacy. Jim told him he owned a diamond business and was also an auctioneer., something that made him travel all over the world. This mineral, to which the alleged scammer owes his nonexistent fortune, is the same mine dedicated to Israeli Simon Leviev, who cheated on several of his partners on Tinder and now has his own documentary on Netflix. “He told me he had business problems and would go to Israel or Angola for weeks“, explains the victim. He supposedly sent photos from these places and kept her informed of his work efforts.

On his way back from one of his rides started to borrow money, losing a large amount of money at one of his jobs: “He asked me for something loose first, but always gave it back to me so I accepted“The numbers have increased and the demands have remained almost constant”50 here, 40 there“Until I hit three zeros and then disappeared. It might not be a very high amount, but she knew my financial situation was not good,” said the woman, feeling her self-confidence undermined.

The money was gone, Jim was gone, and no one was answering the phones.. “He even deleted WhatsApp and I think he blocked me on Telegram,” he suspects. At first he deferred, with assurances that he would repay the loan, but after a period of three weeks he cut off all contact. There was always a hidden suspicion, says the victim: had no social networks, testimonials or full credibility; but ‘there was no reason not to trust him’. The logical thing was to think that she was fed up with him and that after five months of relationship she had put ground between them, but when she went to a lawyer, that sadness turned into suspicion and she explained that the situation had all the patterns of a perfect deception. : “He was the one who encouraged me to complain because he said I could do the same thing with more girls at once.”

Few days after he went to the police station, the fears were confirmed: he is not the only victim of this scammer from Oviedo and “who knows if he’s been wandering around the city more”. “I had a bad time because when he stopped showing signs of life, the first thing I thought was if he had had an accident. At this time, beyond hope of reclaiming what was lost, what the complainant wants to do is avoid the same trance for other victims: “it’s funny, you get tangled and you fall”.
