Global Times warns European Union of pressure on Beijing over sanctions against Russia
The European Union (EU) should not think it has influence over Beijing. This warning was issued by the Chinese edition of the Global Times.
The material says the EU needs cooperation with China, which remains its largest trading partner. It specifies that the mutual interests are so great that relations should in no case deteriorate through senseless threats and rhetoric about anti-Russian sanctions.
Global Times notes that the United States and the European Union are trying to change China’s attitude towards Russia and the situation in Ukraine. Beijing, on the other hand, rejects the statements of the West and calls for negotiations and the fastest possible solution to the crisis. In addition, China accuses NATO countries of contributing to the deterioration of Russian-Ukrainian relations.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian stressed that the responsibility for what is happening rests with the West, which is why Beijing will not tolerate any pressure.
On March 22, National Interest columnist Mark Episkopos said China “blatantly ignored” anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the West over the situation in Ukraine.
Washington previously announced it would impose sanctions on Chinese companies that continue to trade in Russia.
