Scientists at Ruskin University in England have found that participating in sports improves well-being and can reduce feelings of loneliness. The research was published in the journal Boundaries in Public Health.
Scientists used survey data of more than seven thousand people aged 16 to 85 years. The analysis showed that sports fans who attended sports matches scored higher on life satisfaction. Previously, higher rates of life satisfaction were associated with better physical health, successful aging, and a lower risk of death.
Researchers believe that participating in sporting events can be used as a tool to reduce loneliness and increase community well-being. For example, it can be implemented by providing discounts to certain groups of people who are more likely to suffer from loneliness.
While many existing initiatives promote the benefits of physical activity, fewer studies have focused on the mental health associated with watching sports.
