The United States included in the draft budget for next year funds for the creation of a tractor that would be needed to flood the International Space Station (ISS). The relevant draft budget for the 2024 fiscal year was published on area White House.
The column on space projects states that the United States should prepare to safely sink the ISS by de-orbiting first as it moves to cheaper commercial space stations.
“Rather than relying on Russian systems that can’t complete this mission, the budget provides $180 million to begin development of a new space tug,” Metin says.
It is noted that such a tractor could be useful for other space transport missions.
In January last year, Russian cosmonaut Vladimir Solovyov, flight director of the Russian division of the ISS saidThat the United States plans to flood the orbital station after the operation is complete. According to him, they plan to remove the station from orbit in less than a decade – by 2028-2030, although its expected life will end sooner.
The ISS became operational in the fall of 1998. In 2015, Roscosmos and NASA agreed to extend the life of the station until 2024.
The orbital station is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most expensive object made by man. The total cost of the project is more than 150 billion dollars.
