Scientists estimate that a quarter of women in the world have experienced domestic violence

About a quarter of women in the world have been a victim of domestic violence by a partner in their lifetime. Article about it published at The Lancet.

“Physical and sexual partner violence by husbands and boyfriends is very common in the world,” says Mathieu Mae-Gyroux of McGill University in Canada.

According to a published article, one in seven women has experienced domestic violence in the past year, surveys conducted between 2000 and 2018. A high proportion of victims of violence were young women aged 15 to 19 – 24 percent. The researchers obtained such data by summarizing the results of 366 studies involving 2 million women from 161 countries. The scientists point out that we are talking about surveys, not about law enforcement information or medical examination data.

The study’s authors found that the level of domestic violence depends on the region. In high-income countries, the proportion of women who have experienced violence in their lifetime was lower. The highest levels of domestic violence were recorded in Africa, South Asia and South America, while the lowest levels were recorded in Central Asia and Central Europe.

The proportion of women who survived violence in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific increased from 5 percent last year to 30 percent from 15 percent in parts of Africa.
