Who doesn’t want to prolong the life of their pet? Dogs, for example, are loyal companions to millions of people in Spain, but their average lifespan is short. Now, An American company whose goal is to prolong the lifespan of dogs (and in healthy conditions) is about to launch a pill to extend the lifespan of these pets. It is currently conducting relevant tests of two versions of the same product.
San Francisco-based company Loyal has completed extensive studies of how aging affects different breeds and older dogs. In the last few years, experts It evaluated 500 animals of different breeds, sizes, and ages from all over the United States.
There are two products in trial phase. On the one hand, LOY-001 will be a drug to be administered every three to six months to larger dogs that normally live half as long as smaller ones. LOY-002, on the other hand, will attempt to manage healthy aging in dogs of a certain age of almost any size and breed. The company product “It improves metabolic fitness, which will prolong the number of healthy years your dog lives.”
In the same 2023, the LOY-001 product will start to be tested on dogs and its launch is estimated to take place in 2026. LOY-002 will be released earlier: in 2024because in 2023, decisive tests will already be conducted to confirm the results.
The effect of epigenetics on dogs
Ongoing research is also focusing on the impact of epigenetics on aging in dogs.. Epigenetics is the study of how behavior and environment can affect the way genes work. Unlike traditional genetics, which focuses on the order of letters that make up DNA, Epigenetics is a newer field dedicated to understanding the processes that turn specific genes on and off. “If you think of DNA sequencing as an instruction manual for the body, then epigenetics is like handwritten notes that indicate which parts to read carefully and which to ignore,” Loyal says.
“Our study examines this data on thousands of dogs and we will use the results to develop health measures and medicines aimed at helping dogs live longer, healthier lives.”
“DNA methylation is one of many types of epigenetic modifications added to DNA that control which parts of DNA are active in a cell,” writes Zane Koch of Loyal.
“Recently, researchers have discovered that DNA methylation patterns change in cells throughout an organism’s body as time passes. […] These changes in DNA methylation are closely related to aging. So much so that computational models called “epigenetic clocks” can accurately predict an organism’s age based on DNA methylation alone.”
“At Loyal, we create advanced tools that leverage our unique canine epigenetic datasets to predict health, longevity and improve drug development.”Coach continued. “Soon, you and your dog will be able to benefit from these insights directly through a test that provides information about health and lifestyle, or indirectly through faster therapeutic treatment.”
If Loyal is successful in anti-aging pills for dogs, It is possible that one day they will be useful to people as well.because the information that explains how and why we age is turned into treatments that slow these processes and drugs that can help us with the same purpose.
