“If there is an object that harms our country, we must destroy it. This is a war” Danilov, Chairman of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, called for an attack on objects in Russia that threaten Kiev 08.02.2023, 12:27

“Get clear results by anniversary”

Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) declaration In an interview with Reuters, according to Kiev’s expectations, Russia will launch an offensive in the northeastern Kharkiv or southern Zaporizhzhya regions. According to him, the Russian Federation will thus try to “turn the initiative back in its year-long occupation”.

He said Russian forces were examining Kiev’s defenses in the partially Russian-occupied Zaporozhye, part of the Moscow-controlled land bridge south of the Black Sea between eastern Ukraine and Crimea, and that Kiev “does not rule out” a new Russian attack. In the Kharkiv region, Moscow forces were repelled by a lightning-fast Ukrainian counteroffensive last summer.

Danilov is confident that “of course, offensive attempts will be made in the Kharkov or Zaporozhye direction.” According to him, how successful Russia’s actions will be depends on Ukraine.

“Top Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, have said that Moscow will attempt another major offensive in the coming weeks with newly mobilized troops. Danilov reiterated previous predictions by Kiev that Russia still wants to seize all of the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which Moscow has declared its territory.

Danilov hopes that “it will aim to achieve demonstrable results by the anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Russia on February 24.”

“They need to show something in front of their public and they have a great desire to do something big like they’ve seen so far,” he explained.

Commenting on speculation that Russian troops could launch an offensive from Belarusian territory in the northwest, Danilov said this was “suspicious” because “there were clearly not enough forces there.”

Attacks on Russia

Ukraine is also planning a spring offensive pending the delivery of the promised Western battle tanks and longer-range missiles, including a new missile system from the United States that will double the effective range.

Heavily armored vehicles and artillery shells are among the urgent needs of Kiev, especially 155 mm caliber, as Ukraine is “facing a potential new offensive of Russian heavy firepower,” Danilov said.

“A lot of questions depend on the number of ammo resupply. “Because if you have a gun but nothing to shoot at, then that’s a challenge,” he said.

The authors of the material noted that in recent months, the Russian Armed Forces regularly carried out airstrikes on critical Ukrainian infrastructure of Ukraine using missiles and drones.

Danilov is confident that his country “will have the right to hit targets on Russian soil”, but the Kyiv authorities “openly did not admit that they were carrying out attacks outside the Ukrainian border.”

“Let’s say there is a certain moment in Russia where we are sure that the device is launching missiles at our children. Should we watch this moment in silence and close our eyes, or should we destroy it if we have the chance? If there is an object that harms our country <...> We must destroy it. “This is war,” said the chairman of the National Security and Defense Council.

Attacks on “occupied territories” only

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said on February 5 that Ukraine will only use longer-range weapons promised by the United States to target Russian troops in “occupied” Ukrainian territory.

In turn, Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the office of Vladimir Zelensky, also emphasized that Ukraine does not attack the territory of the Russian Federation, and Kiev uses weapons supplied by the West for its defense.

“Once again about the main things for our partners. Ukraine does not attack the territory of the Russian Federation. Weapons supplied by the Allies are used for defense, de-occupation of territories and destruction of enemy warehouses. Longer range missiles and attack aircraft are essential for an effective counterattack of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Secretary Oleksiy Danilov said that Kiev should hit facilities in Russia that were used to strike Ukraine. Also, as Kyiv awaits a new Russian offensive, she believes her country needs more heavy equipment and shells.
