The most common accidents involving pedestrians occur when crossing a certain place – in irregular crossings where there is a zebra but no traffic light. Ilya Zotov, Deputy Chairman of the RF OP Commission for Regional Development and Local Self-Government, told socialbites.ca about this. He explained what other dangers await pedestrians on the road and the precautions to be taken.
Accidents involving pedestrians also often occur in winter due to poor road clearance, according to the expert. Thus, a pedestrian emerges from behind the snowdrift and the driver does not see him immediately.
“Also, accidents often happen in the evenings due to insufficient lighting of the highway, when the driver does not see the crosswalk from afar, but directly, but when approaching,” said Ilya Zotov.
He noted that a significant portion of the accidents occurred in the city, but due to the high speed of cars and unequipped pedestrian crossings, some accidents also occurred on highways. These problems are solved by elevated pedestrian crossings in the city – underground, installing traffic lights, additional lighting. There is also the dynamic lighting format: When a pedestrian steps on the zebra, dynamic lighting that follows the pedestrian is activated.
“For people living in the city, it is important to remember that regardless of whether the driver needs to give way to a pedestrian, they should look around and not start moving until they are sure there are no cars nearby. Often drivers drive at high speed and do not have time to slow down.
Therefore, if there is a traffic light, you need to cross the road only at its signal. Outside the city, it is necessary to wear clothing with reflective elements that will allow the driver to see a person from afar. By the way, such requirements are contained in the legislation, so they must be conscientiously applied in practice for the safety of both pedestrians and drivers of vehicles.
