In 2022, 45% of Russians said they were not afraid of scientific discoveries. About informs According to the results of the annual survey TASS.
Science caused fear and distrust in some people long before the advent of the New Age. Scientists have often been accused of witchcraft, heresy, or blasphemy, and many of the fears today are about the potentially harmful consequences of their discovery. Fear of science reached a new level after the proliferation of nuclear weapons, when humanity found an easy way to literally destroy civilization.
“The number of people who are not afraid of any scientific discovery is increasing – 44.7% compared to 41.8% a year ago. On the contrary, the number of those who find it difficult to answer this question is decreasing.”
The study also showed that almost one in five people fear weapons of mass destruction and the development of new military technologies in general. In 2022, the share of responses in this category increased from 14% to 19%. Most often, respondents mentioned nuclear weapons, with about 7% concerned about developments in this area.
At the same time, only those who are afraid of computers and artificial intelligence are small – about 12%. A special surprise against the background of the recent COVID-19 epidemic may be the attitude towards experiments with viruses and DNA – only 6% of Russians compared to 9% in 2021 new afraid of the emergence of pathogens. Cloning and manipulation of the genome is a concern for 3% of the population.
Therefore, if we exclude from the answers the fears about the objectively dangerous things created for mass murder, we can conclude that the inhabitants of Russia are practically not afraid of science.
