Gee came to the USA to study electrical engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology in 2013 and was arrested in 2018.
According to the Justice Department, Ji joined the U.S. Army Reserve in 2016 as part of a recruitment program for foreigners whose skills are vital to the national interest. At the same time, Ji said he had no contact with the government and intelligence for the past seven years.

These included Chinese nationals who worked as engineers and scientists for US defense companies.
In addition, Ji met several times in 2018 with an undercover US law enforcement agent posing as a representative of China’s Ministry of State Security. During these interviews, Ji claimed that, under his military identity, he could visit and photograph American aircraft carriers.
Ji also told the agent that he plans to become an American citizen and then seek a job at the CIA, FBI or NASA so that he can access all their databases, including scientific research.
Previously reportedAustralian authorities have reportedly decided to extradite former US Navy pilot Daniel Duggan to the US, who was accused of training Chinese military pilots to land on aircraft carriers.
