In April 2023, Yandex held a commanding share of search queries among Russian users of iPhone and iPad, accounting for more than half of the market. This was reported by the Izvestia edition.
For the first time, Yandex surpassed Google on iOS, capturing 49.4 percent of demand, according to Izvestia. The same source noted that Yandex maintained its lead in terms of iOS demand in May. On Android devices, Yandex has led since 2018, and in May 2023 it controlled about 64 percent of all queries on that platform.
The share of Yandex has shown a steady rise since 2020, with a notable surge in 2022 and 2023. Industry experts cited by Izvestia attribute this growth to improvements in the service’s functionality and user experience.
Specifically, Sergey Polovnikov, who heads the Content-Review project, pointed to heightened popularity following the introduction of the YandexGPT chatbot. The chatbot began to appear within the Alice virtual assistant and within the Yandex browser, enhancing discovery and engagement for a broad user base.
Earlier reporting from Russia noted the development of a new Telegram client tailored for the domestic Aurora mobile operating system, marking another step in the localization of popular online tools and services for Russian users.
