Hackers at DEF CON 2022 in Las Vegas managed to break into a new technology of the US Department of Defense – local autonomous electrical networks (microgrids) at military bases. This has been reported cyber scoop.

It is stated that the Pentagon is testing the technology to investigate security vulnerabilities. Most of the more than 1,700 DEF CON members have successfully shut down a fake network similar to the one devised by the Pentagon.

One of the hackers learned that microgrids operate on the Kelvin temperature scale, which does not use negative values. As a result, it put negative numbers in the prediction model that caused the system to crash.

The Pentagon said they also plan to launch a full-fledged program to further test the microgrid and find the loopholes.

A microgrid is a technology used to segment a power system. Each cell can operate autonomously when necessary and actively use alternative energy sources.
