Samsung has announced the development of a new solid-state battery technology for use in premium electric vehicles. According to the company, the new batteries will provide vehicles with a range of up to 1,000 kilometers. Mass production is planned for 2027. reports Edition of The Elec.
Solid-state batteries offer a number of advantages over traditional lithium-ion batteries, including no risk of fire, longer range and shorter charging times. Samsung said several automakers are already testing the batteries, but did not name specific companies.
While solid-state batteries can be expensive, Samsung plans to use them in “super premium electric vehicles,” giving them a range of 900 to 1,000 km per charge and increased safety. In the long run, swapping batteries could also lower the price of cars because it reduces weight and space.
Samsung also plans to start producing batteries that can be charged in nine minutes and last for 20 years by 2029. Samsung’s EV battery rival LG Energy also plans to start producing solid-state batteries in 2030, targeting the premium segment of the market.
