A pirated app for watching TV series, disguised as a program for working with photos, has successfully passed verification in the Apple App Store. reports edition 9to5mac.

Collect Cards: The Store box app had a simple interface for managing photo and video content, but after installation, it turned into a platform offering illegal material from popular streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and Apple TV+.

The key to the success of this cunning maneuver was the determination of users’ geolocation. In the US and some other regions, the application showed only harmless functionality for working with photos, thus attracting the attention of App Store moderators. At the same time, residents of Brazil and other countries gained access to pirated content, which allowed the application to even take a high place in the ranking of free applications in the Brazilian App Store.

Despite this, Apple removed the app from its store. The App Store moderation team of over 500 experts reviews over 100,000 apps each week, but relying on automated systems still allows such apps to slip through the cracks, as in this case.
