Japanese gamers are calling for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows to be cancelled due to historical inaccuracies. Over 25,000 people have already signed the petition reports iXBT.games portal.
The petition authors claim that the game’s plot ignores important historical facts about the samurai class, the highest echelon of the warrior class, who served as vassals of the nobility. The document also mentions William Adams (Miura Anjin), who was the first European to hold the title of samurai and served Tokugawa Ieyasu. Ubisoft’s misinterpretation of the essence and role of the samurai is considered a serious insult to Japanese culture and history.
The events in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows take place in the late 16th century. One of the main characters of the game is the black samurai Yasuke, who also exists in reality.
“Ubisoft still fails to understand the essence and role of the samurai throughout history. This is a serious insult to Japanese culture and history and may contribute to anti-Asian racism,” he said.
The petition was created after several Japanese gamers criticized Ubisoft and the game, particularly after assistant narrative director Brooke Davis called the game “fiction” in a video. Davis explained that the game’s plot is historical fiction based on real events and figures, but was created by Ubisoft’s writing team in collaboration with historical researchers and consultants.
