American technology company Cerebras announced the creation of the Wafer Scale Engine 3 (WSE-3) processor, the world’s largest computer chip designed to work with artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This has been reported Web site Brains.
The device contains 900 thousand cores and consists of a square silicon sheet with a side of 21.5 centimeters. According to the developers, WSE-3 contains 4 trillion transistors.
By comparison, one of the most powerful chips currently used to train AI models is the Nvidia H200 graphics processing unit (GPU). It contains only 80 billion transistors, which is 57 times fewer than the Cerebras chip.
WSE-3 is planned to be used in the anticipated supercomputer Condor Galaxy 3. The expected computing power of the system will be eight exaflops, and with its predecessors Condor Galaxy 1 and Condor Galaxy 2, system performance is expected to reach 16 exaflops.
For comparison, the most powerful Frontier supercomputer today, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States, produces about 1 exaflop of power.
Cerebras plans to use Condor Galaxy 3 to train future AI systems that will be 10 times more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini.
